The most accurate answer would be: Sum of all miles from all roads. Above two answers could never be correct.

actually this questions is like that :
    how many cars in USA
u can answer any number u want
    and argue later:

ask the interviewer to count them for u
if he finds more cars than , more cars have been bought since he last counted …
if less then a lot of cars have been scrapped…

the same thing applies to road also
    enjoy

This series of questions is called Guesstimates, and tests ur ability to make meaningful guesses and assumptions. Some other questions like this are ‘how many helicopters are flying overhead right this moment?’ and ‘what is the number of tennis balls made in the US anually?’

    jhumri:

I think you mean 0.625 times the number of km in the USA since 1.6 km = 1 mile.

Assumption 1: The length of roads is directly proportional to the number of people in the vicinity.

Guesstimate: In Seattle, the population is 500K and sum total of roads is ~1K miles.

US has a population of 100 million and assuming similar ratio has ~200K miles of road

Imagine imposing a grid of roads on a map of the U.S. Say, 3000 x 3000 miles. Guess that there might be an average of 5 miles between each hypothetical, vertically and horizontally. Therefore, vertically, 3000/5=600 lines. Same horitzontally. Therefore, I guestimate 600*3000 + 600*3000, or about 3,600,000 miles of road.

    A wild guess!

Use any graph data structure, which will be having all the places and there distance.
Count all the distance and this will be answer.

This could be a Matrix structure or Adjency metrix.

Could assume that US is 3000 X 2000 miles, so 6,000,000 sq. miles. Further assume that roads take up 2% of that number: so 60,000 x 2 = 120,000 sq miles of road. Assume a road is 20 feet wide, so therefore there is 120,000/(1/264) of roads (5280/20=264). 120,000*264= 3,168,000 miles of road.

    What do you think?

just open a map of US and count the no. of squares it have.(of course built by longitudes and latitudes).assume that one square may have x miles of road so US has (no. of total squares)*x miles

I would say around 5% of the US area would be roads. Imagine a map of US with all the roads showing as red lines. I would imagine if I gather them all up, only 5% or so of the US area would be covered with roads.
