Imagine you were going to spend the weekend at a friend's house
on a little island off the coast of Maine. There are no shops on
the island and you won't be able to leave while you're there. Also,
you've never been to this house before, so you can't assume it will
have more than any house might.
What, besides clothes and toiletries, do you make a point of packing?

I would like to carry a satalite phone to communicate with the outside world so that in the time of dire need i could manage something.
In addition to the satelite phone I would love to have my swimming costume .. as this will help me to enjoy my weekend on beach….:)
I would approach this problem in such a way.. What do i need on daily basis.
1. Food- I would take enough amount of unperishable items and some perishable stuff which would last only 2 days.
2. Clothes - Ofcourse a basic set of clothes which can washed and reworn.
3. Toiletries
4. Satellite phone - In case of emergency to contact people. Charger for the phone.
5. A laptop and charger and find a way to have broadband connection there. Once i have the internet i can buy practically everything and get it shipped to Maine. Infact if i’m fed up of the place i can book a ticket back too..
6. Of course my credit cards without which i cannot make transactions on internet.
These are the items i would carry if i have extra space in my baggage:
1. A pack of batteries.
2. Torch and a set of candles.
3. A set of simple but interesting board games which would keep me occupied in case of boredom.
I would worry most about safety, comfort, and boredom.
For safety I’d be worried about a major storm knocking out power to the island during winter, making it potentially a cold weather survival situation - so maybe take fire building tools, emergency food, etc. I might also worry about the boat to the island sinking so possibly a lifejacket. In real life I’d probably just ask ahead if those items were taken care of rather than bring them. Small but possibly very helpful items are a small flashlight, pocket knife, lighter, etc.
For comfort, I would want clothing appropriate to the normal range of weather, sunglasses & lotion, hiking boots or beach sandals, etc. Possibly most of that falls under clothing & toiletries. I would probably ask to see what the friend recommends bringing compared to what they already have.
For boredom, I would bring a couple of books and maybe a notebook computer. It is pretty easy to pass far more than a weekend with nothing but a few books and a decent food supply.
Finally, I’d try to have a lot better time than the worst case scenario! Digital camera for catching the fun and scenery, binoculars for animal watching, maybe a fishing pole, swimming trunks, a couple bottles of wine.
In a job interview it might be better to start and end with positive assumptions about the fun you’ll prepare for having, and mention the worries less.
