“I bought this guide a few days ago to prepare for my interview with Oracle. Many of the questions they asked me were from this guide. I found this book absolutely great!”
This kind of questions are generally asked how you create logic for problems.
ofcourse this will have a fix answer but interviewer is not expecting the exact number from you. He would like to see how you will approach this problem.
may be : one can start like:
(1) US population 300million
(2) say around 50% of the people own a vehicle. it can be anything motor bike, car, truck etc.
(3) so it means there are around 150 million vehicles.
(4) say owner needs tank full fuel one in a month (that too just an estimate).
(5) so around 5 million vehicles needs to be refilled daily
(6) say one filling station can provide fuel to 500 vehicles in a day ..
(7) so there will be around 5000000 / 500 = 10000 filling station..
Look in yellow pages count number of stations, divide by population of area, multiply by population of US.
For more precise answer choose several yellow pages from different size regions/cities multiply each by population living in those size regions.
