This question takes some basic knowledge about the population of the united states and the world…not really about piano tuners.

First think about how many pianos there are and how often they are used. Pianos are typically owned by middle to upper class households, and are also found schools, churches, hotels, etc.

The US population is approx 300 million. Assuming that each household has 3 people in it, that leaves 100 mil lion households. Of those, 50 million are in the middle to upper class and may have pianos. Of those 50 million households, you can think that no more than 10 percent have pianos. (That is probably high…it may be more like 2-3%). Anycase, that leaves us with approximately 5 million households with pianos.

Now you need to think about how many piano tuners it takes to maintain those pianos. I would say a typical piano tuner could tune approx 20 pianos a week (2 hours each), and given a full year, that is approximately 1000 pianos.

Now, how often do pianos need to be tuned? Once a year maybe? If that is the case, then there would be 1 piano tuner for every 1000 pianos. That mean approx 5000 piano tuners in the US.

Now think about the rest of the world, it’s population, and it’s wealth. I would guess that the US has 1/3 of the world’s pianos. Therefore, I would guess the total number of piano tuners in the world is approximately 15000.

I wonder how close that guess is?

Number of Piano Tuners is equal to Number of Pianos at any given instant of time…Just that some are professionals and some are amatures!

The economist would argue that if the market is in balance, then there are enough piano tuners to meet demand. If not, the price of piano tuning will adjust in the short run until the supply can meet demand in the long run. The number need not be fixed nor constant.

There are about the same number of people who play piano and who play golf.
I know the golf population is about 1000:1 .
And one tuner can tune 100 pianos per year ( suppose he charge $300 each tune, $30k would make a living)
    world population 2,000,000,000 /1000 / 100 = 20,000 piano tuners

I think we should go with a combination of different parameters. Just by going with the population is not enough. The first answer made good estimations for the population but given that a tuner can tune a piano in 2 hours and concluding one man tunes 1000 thousand pianos yearly means unrealistic. Because, first of all how sparse is that piano owner population? Since piano is very heavy to carry, the tuner has to travel. So I assume he is limited by driving distance. He can’t fly to tune a piano (too costly). So, the piano tuner number is limited by the metropolitan area piano numbers.

    Here it goes
    1) At first I will list out all the piano manufacturing companies in the world.
    2) Then I will look into their purchase records and find out the piano purchasers information.
    3) i) If the purchase is made by an individual or a house hold then the piano is played at best case by all the people of the house.
ii) Else if the piano is purchased for school then I will list out the students that opted the piano course in their music curriculum.
iii) If the piano is purchased by a Church then I will count the no of major or minor events of the church and count the piano users.
If I sum up all the numbers I will get more or less accurate piano users count.
