“I bought this guide a few days ago to prepare for my interview with Oracle. Many of the questions they asked me were from this guide. I found this book absolutely great!”
a hub is a physical layer device providing absolutey NO intelligence. A switch is a data link layer device which isolates collision domains vs. routers which isolate broadcast domains, giving each connection to a switch a “private” connecting (no collisions/contention). Think of a switch as a multi-port bridge of sorts, allocation a time slice to each connection, but very quickly.
Router works on Layer 3, Switch on Layer 2 and Hub on Layer1 (not on Layer 2 and 3 as suggested above) because it doesn’t make any routing or switching decisions just transfer that on devices attached on all its ports.
7. Application layer
6. presentation layer
5. Session layer
4. Transport layer
3. Network layer
2. Datalink layer
1. Physical layer
at layer 3(i.e Network layer), a switch, router and hub all operates.
i think hub and switch are layer 2 devices
